Activision: Guitar Villians

“My old man said I’d never amount to anything.”
There’s Rock Band and there’s Guitar Hero III. The two games are half-brothers, having originated from the same bloodlines, but they’re also fierce rivals. Ah, but they are still so very different. Whereas Rock Band is the cheerful brother who knows he has the power to level the world but modestly exudes a happy, harmless demeanor, Guitar Hero III is the sharp-toothed, sulky brother who is not shy about reminding others of his lesser–but still vast–powers.

Maybe that’s not the best metaphor ever, but there’s undeniably something Grinch-hearted about Activision’s decision to block Guitar Hero III’s support for Playstation 3’s Rock Band. Harmonix was set to release a patch that would make Guitar Hero III’s guitars compatible with Rock Band, but Activision has said uhn-uhn. This sucks hardcore for Playstation 3 Rock Band owners, as Rock Band’s pack-in guitar ain’t so hot.

Here’s hoping Activision sees reason, though it’s not advisable that anyone hold their breath.
