Adding the touch of Christmas

With Christmas right at our heals, Darren raises idea’s about optimizing your blog geared to the “Silly Season”. The facts are in – the Christmas period is where blogs and websites see a slight increase in traffic, therefore the potential to earn more via affiliate programs and contextual advertising.

If your blog is geared towards a product niche, for example camera’s or phones, now is the perfect time to get into an affiliate program to earn that little bit on the side for people who are on the look out to buy Christmas presents online !

If you have Google adsense or Yahoo Publishing network on your blog, spice it up a little! Read some guides on correct ad placement, experiment with colors – perhaps give your ads that Christmassy feel! The other thing I tend to see on websites around this period is when webmasters change their logo’s or website colors to gear up for the Christmas period.

For example.

  • Give your logo a Santa hat !!
  • Add falling snow to your website (though readers may find this annoying)
  • Give your website a new red and green Christmas theme!
  • Trust me, your readers will love it and so will your adsense earnings !

      ooh – santa’s hats….nice idea.

Not sure about the falling snow – Christmas here in Australia is often a day for shorts and T-Shirts :-)

For me a Christmas theme on a website gives me a two second ahhhh, and then it’s “get this crap off”.

If you are going to ruin your website with seasonal themes, then remember that Christmas does not start in November. I went past a house the other day and they already had their decorations up, what the hell is wrong with cold grey walls?

Actually I am quite looking forward to crimbo, my little boy is one and it’s his first, so I have an excuse to buy a hornby train set. Yeah.

Lyndoman, there are at least 20 or so houses within 500 metres of my house that have Christmas decorations up already! And I’m talking the whole deal, blow up santas, fake reindeer and enough Christmas lights to make you blind.

I find Christmas interesting for it’s symbology, like the Christmas tree is a pagan symbol, I think it’s to worship some Norse God. And mistletoe is a pagan fertility symbol, I could go on and I probably will.

What really gets the pedant in my riled, is that there were no three wise men, only wise man with three gifts and Christ was a young boy, not a baby in the manger when they hiked over from the East.

But my favourite is the Coca Cola company, the reason Santa (not Father Christmas, two different people) is red is because of the coca cola company. But I can’t be bothered to explaing so go look it up.
