Airport Runway Ads Are Coming

Well, almost.

I found a great post on Top Lead Generators today by Dan Tudor about a company in the United Kingdom called Ad-Air Group Plc that is rolling out a big way to advertise — huge ads (approximately 5 acres in size or 4-times the size of the Dallas Cowboys’ football field in Texas) placed around airports so airline passengers landing and taking off can see them out of their airplane windows.

The company has secured space in several large cities including Atlanta and Los Angeles in the United States with its first airport ad expected to debut in Dubai next month.  To give you an idea of what Ad-Air can do, check out this picture from the Ad-Air website gallery of the world’s largest banner ad (and Guinness World Record Holder) from Ad-Air and Sorouh Real Estate.

Very cool.  Will gigantic advertising take off (no pun intended)?  What do you think?  I wonder how much a giant airport outdoor ad costs?  It would be interesting to compare the cost and reach of this type of ad versus other advertising placement options.  There is certainly no doubt this type of ad will get consumers’ attention.  Of course, to see it, you have to be on an airplane, so the target audience would need to be airline travellers to get the biggest bang for the buck.  What do you think about this marketing tactic?

  1. A similar story appeared back in June. It kicked up quite a stink with environmentalists in the UK because that ad was drawn across farmland and other countryside.

I personally think it’s completely absurd! If the land is there, then it should be put to another use — build a stadium, or a park, or just let the land be somewhat wild. Trees never hurt an urban environment.

However, I wouldn’t mind if it were some kind of garden that spelled a word or image from high altitude.
