30 Rock actor, Alec Baldwin, is finally talking about how he really felt after that horrible voicemail tirade to his daughter was leaked to the world back in 2007. The unfortunate message was left for his daughter, Ireland, while he and her mother, Kim Basinger, were involved in a very ugly custody battle.
Initially, Baldwin issued a statement saying that he was “saddened” and “sorry” about the incident but he has revealed that the aftermath was actually much worse. In an interview with Playboy, he says: “[I was] very serious…I spoke to a lot of professionals, who helped me. If I committed suicide, they [Kim Basinger's team] would have considered that a victory. Destroying me was their avowed goal.”
Baldwin also explains that the actions of Today show host, Matt Lauer, has left a very bitter taste in his mouth: “When that voice-mail tape thing happened, Matt Lauer interviewed [TMZ's Harvey] Levin before he even called me. Lauer put Levin on Today, and they never phoned me…I saw that and said, ‘My relationship with the Today show is over.’ I’ll never do Today again ever. Life’s too short.”
Over the years, I have definitely seen Lauer do some questionable things and he really doesn’t seem like a very nice person to me. I have felt that he has left some celebrities out to dry and it just makes him look like a jerk. Fortunately, he wasn’t turned off of all daytime talk shows: “I trusted Whoopi and Barbara Walters. Whoopi is an impeccably decent person, and I’m grateful she gave me a forum.”
I found another quote of his very interesting. He said: “I have this silly fantasy. I get married again, I have a kid. I’d love another shot at that, with everything I’ve learned. My kid’s like eight, comes home and says, ‘Dad, Jimmy’s mom says you were a famous actor on TV and in the movies. Is that true?’ And I go, ‘Yes, Johnny, Dad was famous.’ ”
Isn’t that incredible? Some people spend their whole lives trying to be famous yet some fantasize about a life where everything is just normal. I hope that he finds some form of this happiness in his life!
