Alex Rios Claimed on Waiver Wire

After the Toronto Blue Jays put Alex Rios on waivers, another team claimed the right fielder. Now the Blue Jays can either trade Rios to that team, reclaim him or let him walk.

Putting players on waivers at this point of the baseball season is a common practice. The idea is that if the player clears waivers, he is able to be traded — which, in effect, lengthens baseball’s trade deadline.

Rios’ case is different because the Blue Jays may actually let him go. He recently signed a $70 million deal and he’s simply not living up to expectations. To save money, Toronto might wave goodbye.

On the season, the 28-year-old is hitting .261 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs. His batting average is a career low and the rest of his production isn’t where it has been in the past. While he has a good amount of potential, it’s questionable whether or not he’s worth his $70 million to a team like the Blue Jays.

Stay tuned to see what happens.
