Anyone can type letters on a keyboard. Not everyone can make words mean something. Thus I take issue:

Fun dog-related articles for local online resource

MetroWestDog.com is an online pet directory and resource, and recent start-up.
I am looking for a Writing/Journalsim Intern (or other) to write articles on dog-related subjects. Use your research and interview skills to write articles to be posted on MetroWestDog.com. Write about the local dog scene in MetroWest, lifestyle, health and wellness articles, legal issues, pet fashion and more. Assist small business owners by ghost writing articles about their field.
Also need to write press releases, brochure, direct mail and email newsletter/advertising. Can you blog, too?
You will get a byline on some articles.
I have plenty of ideas for subjects so all you have to do is write!! This can be great for your portfolio!
Dog lover preferred (obviously).

email@withheld.com  no pay

  • Location: MetroWest
  • it’s NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
  • Compensation: no pay

If you have plenty of ideas, why aren’t you the one writing? Could it be because writing isn’t such an easy thing to do? Research and interview skills don’t come cheap. Open any newspaper or turn on your television and you’ll find people being paid good money for their research and interviewing skills. Byline? If we’re ghostwriting how are we getting a byline? Oh wait…there’s a byline on SOME articles. Well that’s generous. And we can use the bylined stuff for our portfolios because this here non-paying website is sure going to take us places.

I’m wondering if this person knows how much work goes into writing press releases, brochures, direct mail and heck, let’s just throw in some blog posts too? Oh that’s right. He’s going to give us ideas and all we have to do is write. There’s nothing to it. It’s not like we need to make a living doing this.

It’s a shame I already picked my ass of the week.

Dude, it’s only Sunday! lol Hopefully by the end of the week there won’t be a tie for … last place??

Of course there’s that magic word–”intern”–which they always feel justifies asking for free labor. So this “intern,” what can he or she expect in return for basically doing ALL the work in YOUR startup business? College credit? A paying job at the end of the “internship”? Neither? Then it’s NOT an internship. It’s a full-time job with no pay or benefits of ANY kind. It’s someone doing your work for you without pay or anything else to show for it while you sit there on your shiftless, untalented butt.

These people need to learn what these terms mean before they throw them around in job ads. “Intern,” “freelance,” “work from home,” “online,” “startup” and “gig” all seem to have become synonyms for “unpaid.” Why is writing the only field where people are expected to work for free? Because the (mistaken) assumption is that ANYONE who’s interested in something can write about it? And that they’re generously giving us a platform from which to express ourselves?

So, Doggy Dude, if “all I’d have to do” is write… why can’t YOU do it yourself? Hmm?

I love it when they use the word “skill.” Gets me all zingy.
