This ad contains some of my favorite words – “hip” and “edgy” because what kid doesn’t love having parents who think they’re hip and edgy? Does anyone remember the Curmudeons rule about “hip and edgy? Most people can’t pull it off and it sounds more ass than anything else. Take this case in point right here:

Remember The Source started as a mere Newletter and within 3 years was considered DA BIBLE of hip-hop. As Hip-hop grows up, so do our needs. So if the Source was the Bible- Dolo Act will be the bedtime story!

WTF? The bedtime story? First you compare yourself to the premiere hip hop magazine of all time, then you make up some lame analogy? The best part of all this assery? No pay because hip and edgy hip hop parents do it for rep.

STOP HATIN’ – If you don’t know why folk will do this work for free- than you don’t know jack about parenting OR hip hop and you need to avoid commenting on either. Anyone who wants to attack my vision (this mag) OR my culture (hip hop) can holla at Don Mama 1 and find out the REAL meaning of “edgy”.
    Rock-a-bye HATER!!!

Wow. My first question; never mind the no pay, was why are ‘hip hop’ parents different than say, hippie parents or blue collar, or mid-line income, or parents who maybe like heavy metal. Don’t all good parents worry about the same issues. Health – support – stimulation – etc. I have friends who talk like the ad above and I have friends that don’t but they’re all cool/nice/etc and they all worry about the same parenting issues.

So there’s that. Plus yup even hip parents need money. That would be what I’d write about first I guess my lack of non paying jobs? How you can’t raise a kid on music and hip alone. Man. Somedays I cannot believe what I see on this blog.

  3. Jennifer, you should have seen the email I received from Ms. Hip Hop Parent. For someone who wants us to stop the hatin’, she sure is a hater.

The know nothings are at it again… commenting on that which they do not understand.
Okay one more time for the slow ones…
Hip Hop isn’t just a genre of music, it is a culture. Yes- it is true that basic concerns transend culture however- there are specific aspects of basic concerns that are specific to HIP HOP culture, which have not been adequately recognized and addressed by mainstream parenting media- so in steps Sowin Seeds magazine… Da Hip Hop Nations Parenting Conversation to be the change we seek.
Hip Hop culture is very geniune and very raw and very unapologetic. (So don’t aspect an apology you hatin ass hater!)
We have seen a lot, and been through a lot that only we can relate to. What does a (culturally)middle class parent know about… broken glass everywhere, people pissin in the street ya know dey just don’t care- caint take the smell and caint take the noise- got no money to move out I guess i got no choice… Nada damn thing!
That’s MY reality. I was raised in the street- BY the street. When I first heard GrandMaster Flash’s ground breaking song “the Message” I was 10 years old and on my 50th hour of sitting in a shooting gallery (the herion version of a crack house) waiting for my parents to run out of money so I could go home to my bed! The next Monday when I got to school and the teacher woke me up and told me I’d be on “time out” if I didn’t raise my head and pay attention- I told her to shut the beep up before I beat her bleepin BEEP. (the same thing I told the hatin ass hater who started this critism in the first place!)

Its like a jungle sometimes in makes me wonder how I kept from going under.

Most Hip Hoppers my age came up through the age of crack and for better or worse we raised ourselves. Now as parents we are stuggling with staying true to our sense of “realness” while dealing with a driving desire to protect the innocence of our children in ways we never had the privilige of experiencing. Hippie parents or anybody else outside of our experience can not help us work through issues like this. Only we can help ourself work through our issues. The awesome crew of writers and editors who have joined this effort have done so FOR FREE cause THEY GET IT and THEY ARE DOWN WIT IT. Hip hop parents need money- thats why we all got degrees and REAL jobs. You should get one (or two like me)… then you’d have more money and less time to comment on things you know nothing about… Like Bob Marley said- Who feels it KNOWS it… and those who don’t feel it or know it should fall back and shut their pieholes!

As for the professional hater who started all this… you ain’t got to hate to kick it… if you wanna be down so bad that you can’t keep my business out your mouth- then just holla at your girl- I’ll put you on- I ain’t mad at you- i know you don’t know no better- hang wit Don Mama 1 and I’ll teach yo lame ass howda stunt!
