Are you a first born? You are more likely to start a business.

Have your own business? Bet you were born first in your family – just like me!

According to a survey in Australia, 40 percent of small business owners are the oldest among their siblings. The ‘babies’ tend not to start businesses.

Also, the results found that having parents that are entrepreneurs have no bearing on if the parent’s children start businesses.

So are you a first born? Do you think it makes a difference in business startup success?

  1. Amanda says:

I’m a middle child with no entrepreneurial parents. :)

  2. John says:

I’m a first born, but I don’t think it affected why I started my own business.

  3. Christina says:

I’m a first born with a stubborn, independent streak. As a kid, I would get really upset if people tried to “baby” me or tell me what to do. Maybe my place in the birth order and my personality were both predictors that I’d own my own business!

This also applies to only children, (me being one.) I also get it from my family. Everyone has had side business at some point in time.

  5. Dan says:

This statistic is not meaningful because this means that 60% of people who own businesses are 2nd or 3rd born, meaning that you are less likely to own a business if you are first born.
