Are You a Solopreneur?

Many small businesses are owned and run by one person. You are the whole business, you’re a solopreneur. Just because you’re a one person show, doesn’t mean you(and others) shouldn’t take your business seriously. It does mean you’ll have to work a little harder.

When you’re a solopreneur you have to know a little about every aspect of your business. Until you can afford to hire someone to do some of the work, you have to do it yourself, or trade services with other small businesses.

As a solopreneur you need to be willing to continuously learn something new to keep your small business growing. Learning the skills it takes to run a small business can be time consuming, and may not be something you’re even interested in learning or doing.

As a solopreneur you’re only accountable to yourself, so you definitely need to be self motivated. Make a business plan, and hold yourself responsible for sticking with the plan. Many solo businesses don’t even get off the ground because the would be business owner does not have the self motivation to make it happen.

One way to stay motivated is to network with other solopreneurs, either locally, or on a larger scale. You can get to know others in your area, or online anywhere in the world. Sometimes when you’re feeling overwhelmed and alone it helps to know there are others in your shoes.

Being a solopreneur isn’t always easy, but it can be a very rewarding experience for you and your business.

  1. Although you’ll want to stick to the plan, you’ll also want to allow yourself some flexibility to change the plan should circumstances change. A business plan is a guide, not a commandment written in stone. Don’t let stubbornness be your business downfall. That said, don’t be wishy washy either. :-)

  2. I agree, Carma. Every month or even more often, it’s good to assess your priorities and see where you should spend more of your time and the tasks you should eliminate or cut back on.

Not only must you be dedicated to your business, you have to manage your time well. If you don’t, your career can take an unhappy detour.
