Arizona’s Lute Olson to Step Down?

October 23, 2008 by Kevin Hunter

Sources tell ESPN’s Dick Vital today that Arizona coach Lute Olson is stepping down and assistant coach Mike Dunlap will take over.

But the school is not making any formal announcement at the moment and is actually denying any reports that Olson is leaving the Wildcats, although Vital is calling the resignation “imminent.”

Olsen was back with Arizona this season after taking a leave of absence last year. He missed practice on Wednesday due to illness.

This would be a huge loss to the Wildcats. Olson led Arizona to an NCAA championship in 1997 and has 27 tournament appearances overall as a coach at Long Beach State, Iowa and Arizona. He was inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame 2002 and has an overall coaching record of 780-280.

There are no reports by Vital or anyone yet on who would be Olson’s permanent replacement.

Stay tuned.
