Asante Samuel signs with the Eagles

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Asante had several trips lined up to visit different NFL teams. This kind of scared the Eagles. So, 57 million dollars with 20 million guaranteed later, Asante is an Eagle.

The Eagles were 5 and 3 in the second half of the season, losing to Super Bowl bound New England by 3, playoff bound Seattle by 4, and Super Bowl Champion New York by 3. They are hoping the Asante can make the difference in those big games in the future.

Samuel tied Denver’s Champ Bailey for the NFL lead with 10 interceptions in 2006 and returned two more picks for touchdowns in the postseason against the Jets and Colts. His 12 total interceptions in the 2006 regular season and playoffs were the highest combined single-season total in Patriots history.

Samuel kept New England’s perfect 2007 regular season alive in late November against the Eagles. He returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown and had a second pick off A.J. Feeley that halted a late Philadelphia drive in New England’s 31-28 victory. source

The Eagles were smart to cough up the big dough immediately as most free agents tend to sign with the last team they visit. Philly did not want Asante to have any more visits. Asante Samuel plays at a very high level.

Samuel, an All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection this past season, knows something about making timely picks. Samuel, who won two Super Bowl rings, has 22 career interceptions in 75 games.

“We regarded Asante as the No. 1 available free agent in the NFL,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said.

No one thinks that Asante alone will take the Eagles to the Super Bowl, but maybe he can be the difference that will take an already great team to the Super Bowl. Your intrepid author already discussed how a healthy Donovan McNabb can take them close, now Asante is another important piece to the puzzle.
