Ask a Tech: How Often Should I Defrag?

This question comes to us from Scott Goldblatt from Timed Finals.

How often should I defrag my computer?

Good question, Scott, and not one that everyone agrees on. Ultimately it comes down to what you use your computer for. If you are a power user with lots of games, media files, etc, you’ll definitely want to defrag once a week. Defragging does put extra stress on your hard drive and so there is a wear and tear factor to keep in mind, but the effects are really negligible.

On the other hand, most average “net users” can get away with a monthly defrag. Again, it all depends on how hard you use your computer.

I have often seen varying views on fragmentation. Personally i feel its a malady that most HDDs fall victim to,( yes inspite of the highspeed , large and modern HDDs) because HDD usage has also become more intensive. However it would depend on the person’s usage pattern. But when the drive gets fragmented, it will affect performance negatively. More significantly, if ignored it can lead to overworking of the drive head and cause heat issues as well. This would be seriously detrimental to the computer health.
