To bolster the team’s spring training roster, the Houston Astros signed Brian Moehler and David Newhan to minor league contracts. The two players will join the Astros when the team begins its spring training in February.

Moehler is a 36-year-old right-hander who pitched for the Astros last season. In 42 relief appearances, Moehler went 1-4 with an ERA of 4.07. The 42 appearances set a career-high for the reliever from North Carolina. Moehler will compete for a bullpen job during spring training.

Newhan is a 34-year-old outfielder who played last year for the New York Mets, where he hit .203 with one homerun in 74 at bats. Before joining the Mets last year, Newhan spent three seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Newhan will be trying to make the Astros as a backup outfielder.
