AMD is getting ready for the release of Windows 7 as they have announced the release of Catalyst 9.3, which is a set of new graphics drivers that support both Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Catalyst 9.3 is marketed as a “unified” graphic driver package because it is one single binary that automatically supports all the WDDM 1.1 features of Windows 7. On Windows Vista, the package supports the WDDM 1.0 features. WDDM is Windows Display Driver Model technology found on Vista (1.0) and 7 (1.1).

ATI confirms that they want the world where they are in Windows 7 and the company’s preparedness in supporting the new operating system. Users utilizing their package should expect higher resolution and the ability to open so many Windows without having memory problems.

Other changes and enhancements include:

1. Windows desktop

2. Aero interface

3. Better Utilization of DirectX 9

When Windows Vista was released there were so many incompatibility problems and most of these problems were vendor’s inability to react to Microsoft’s new operating system. ATI’s initiative to make sure their products are prepared for Windows 7 which is probably 10 months away is a role model vendors should take note. The ability of vendor’s products to work well on the latest operating system is a win-win situation for both Microsoft and the vendor.
