Originally, AT&T was offering $100,000 to catch vandals that affected their service in California. Now, AT&T has upped the ante to $250,000 for information that leads to arresting and convicting those responsible for severing fiber cables nears the cities of San Carlos and San Jose.
Further investigation has discovered that the vandalism took place within manholes. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, took many hours for AT&T to repair and restore service to cell phones, landlines and internet connections.
“We are aggressively working with law enforcement authorities,” said John Stankey, CEO of AT&T Operations, “to see that those responsible for this willful act are apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
The vandals face both state and federal penalties if they are caught. After 9/11, fiber cables were covered and became protected by federal laws.
