Dear Anne,
How can a person without professional writing experience or degree but with a serious love of writing break into freelancing?
Thank you,
jk
Dear JK,
As you already recognize a freelance writing career isn’t like some. If you want to be a banker, you usually start by working as a teller in a bank.
The secret to a freelance writing career is first of all to write, write, write and write some more.
You’ve also got to submit your writing. With persistence and some luck, you’ll gradually get better and start selling what you write.
Another approach would be to get a writing job. [...]
Post from: EveryJoe

Dear JK,

The secret to a freelance writing career is first of all to write, write, write and write some more.

You’ve also got to submit your writing. With persistence and some luck, you’ll gradually get better and start selling what you write.

Another approach would be to get a writing job. Community newspapers don’t pay well, so there’s usually a lot of turnover and the qualifications can be pretty minimal. The work is hard, but it’s a way to get your feet wet while earning minimum wage or slightly better. You may also be able to land a job with other publishers, but be careful you don’t end up just making copies for the writers. You want experience writing.

Good luck.

Do you have a question about freelance writing? Ask Anne, The Writing Pro – that’s me ;) Ask in the comments or send an email and put Q&A in the subject line so I can sort it out from spam and I’ll do my best. Meanwhile, you’ll find some Q&A’s here:

I just posted some 63 freelance writing, editing and translation jobs. There are more, but one of the sites I count on was down. I’m sure it will be back up soon, but I’m going back to bed.
Apparently two or three hours at a time is all the last gasp of this flu will allow.

Yeah, I know. I know. I can just hear the medical doctors clucking saying “she should know a flu shot can’t make her sick.” Yeah, right.
Well maybe. My medical doctor talked me into a flu shot sometime mid-Wednesday afternoon, along with a tetanus shot and some blood drawing for standard tests. I was pleased for several reasons, mostly because her scale matched mine in saying I’d lost about four pounds. I mean how often does that happen?

Well maybe. My medical doctor talked me into a flu shot sometime mid-Wednesday afternoon, along with a tetanus shot and some blood drawing for standard tests. I was pleased for several reasons, mostly because her scale matched mine in saying I’d lost about four pounds. I mean how often does that happen?

Thursday mid-day I noticed my neck and shoulders were feeling stiff and sore – but I’d been grinding at the computer more than usual and did some gentle stretches that seemed to help.

Sometime after midnight I woke up sweating like a proverbial… well sick human being. That fever continued though Friday and into Saturday when it broke sometime late in the day. But the damn thing wasn’t finished with me yet. Next was a raw throat and itchy nose – and I’m still getting some cold symptoms. I feel like I’ve lost the better part of a week – probably because I’ve lost the better part of a week.

I feel better, not great yet, but good enough to be bored which I take as a positive sign.

Write well and often,
