Poll: Halo Wars A Cash Grab?

Ingrid recently posted a trailer showing some Beasley gameplay and seemed optimistic about the potential for RTS fans, but that got me thinking…who are Microsoft trying to appeal to exactly? Their core Halo fans are rip-roaring FPS players who may not care to painstakingly strategize and conquer, they just want to blow crap up. As both an RTS and FPS fan, I figured I’d give it an honest appraisal, and so I watched the trailer only to fall asleep about half way through Gah. Does any game look like more of a franchise cash-in than Halo Wars? Serious….a trumped up strategy title that plans on sucking even more money out of the dozens of devoted Halo fans who care enough to bother. Halo junkies help me out…are you actually... [Read more]

Just in case you weren’t thinking of picking up a copy of Gears of War 2, Epic has sweetened the pot with a couple of treats that may convince you otherwise. The first is really quite fun and is described as a “Flashback Map Pack”. Gamers who purchase a copy will find a voucher that can be cashed in on XBL for a free download of a set of classic maps from the original GoW, including Canals, Subway, and Gridlock. The vouchers are good to go on game release day: November 7th.Buy new and get a voucher, buy used and lose out. Think of it as Epic’s attempt at controlling the seedy underbelly of used game profiteering by the likes of Gamestop et al. The second will be available to those who brave late nights, long lines and... [Read more]

So, so very true. I just ignored my fancy pants FPS titles for an hour and a half of frantic pizza-making action at Papa’s Pizzeria. You just. Can’t. Stop. Brought to you by the crazy folks at xkcd . Image embedded with permission. [Read more]

Latest Obsession: Mirror’s Edge

I’m excited about Mirror’s Edge. Oh yes. With the utopian/distopian Orwellian wonders, the hot chick protagonist with facial tattoos and the great in-game footage that I’ve seen thus far, you better believe I’m going to fire up the old PC to give it a go. It’s already won several best in show awards, including at E3 and in Leipzig. Below is the animated backstory to the game, and an in-game trailer that should blow your socks off can be found if you click here. Reminds me an awful lot of another thing that’s high on my fanlist at the moment: freerunning. Don’t know what I mean? Check out a fairly commercial example with top freerun artists B13 & David Belle, and then spend awed hours surfing... [Read more]
