While economy may be slowing down, analysts keep their predictions that we will not stop searching the net and, therefore, Google is destined for growth while everyone else may be dieing.

WIRED writes this weekend:

“Google continues to gain market in search queries while continuing to face a bevy of competitors,” Peck released in a research note today. “Further, Google’s efforts in online video, radio and print have added a layer of value that is absent from its competitor’s portfolio of offering and which has the potential to yield significant financial rewards.”

Washington Post adds:

“Your Googles and Apples of world are doing great. They’ve really been really innovative, which is what technology is sort of all about,” said Karen Dolan, an analyst at investment research provider Morningstar.

In the third quarter, tech funds showed a 6.6 percent return, Morningstar said. The funds were up 17.8 percent for the first three quarters of the year and 24.9 percent for the past 12 months.

“These funds did experience a quick rebound in 2003, but really tech funds have lagged since the bubble burst,” Dolan said.

Both articles also bash on Yahoo that while they did form some alliances with several newspapers and magazined they are more of a follower company always trying to keep up with Google’s innovation and may, therefore, struggle in making it.

Google took another step today into making its Google Apps product more appealing with integrating security, storage and compliance services from Postini. Postini was <a href="http://www.searchengineherald.com/2007/07/09/google-buys-security-firm-for-625-million-will-it-help/”>purchased by Google over the summer (July) especially for this matter and for now will be integrated into Google Apps Premiere Edition.

The move Wednesday is the latest in a series of forays Google is making into the enterprise space. Google Apps Premier Addition goes up against established enterprise messaging services, most prominently Lotus Notes from IBM and Microsoft Exchange. Google Apps includes a suite of services, such as GMail, Docs, Calendar and GTalk, which are available for business use. However, with Postini, Google Apps Premier Edition will now have a large customer base from which to draw.

Google obviously realizes its weaknesses and is making moves to improve its offerings based on that. This seems to be a smart move on their behalf will most definately help them capture marketshare.

A Texas company is sueing Google, Yahoo and Microsoft for patent infrigement on his Systems and methods for transacting business over a global communications patent. The patent, awarded in 2005 outlines the process of performance base pricing for “for conducting business transactions over the Internet”. The infrigement refers to “smart pricing” which the 3 companies use in their online advertising algorithms.

Sellers offer the product/service within a specified price range, and buyers accept the offer, in exchange for the opportunity to close the transaction at the lowest price offered by achieving a high score during the collateral activity. The ultimate price is within the agreed upon range, but is determined based upon the buyer’s performance during the collateral activity.

According to Eric Goldman, Santa Clara University law professor and tech law blogger, the suit resembles the sort of “lawsuits that we’re concerned about when we worry about patents being used as a way of shaking down people for cash as opposed to advancing social interests”.

This is obviously one of those, “lets patent this idea” rather than an actual system in place. This concept is bein debated by the congress these days for a bill that would overhaul patent litigation, and both Google and Microsoft have lobbied in its favor.

I’ve seen assumption that once Google gets his arms around these subscription stats, an implementation of this data into its Universal Search platform (& algorithm) would be a breeze, and it may as well happen. However, what do you do if you have no current subscribers or anything to offer as a feed?

Some verticals are obviously not “feed materials” but not necessarily need one either. So I guess the trick would be to look around and see what your competitors. Obviously, a newly updated feed would be a sign that you may be missing something, but if no one has it and there isn’t really any frequent news to report I wouldn’t worry about it for now.
