Backlash: Triple H Earns WWE Championship; Matt Hardy Crowned US Champ

WWE Backlash took place last night at the 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Maryland and two major titles changed hands. In the main event Triple H bested former-champ Randy Orton, John Cena, and JBL to claim the most prestigious title in sports entertainment.Cena opened up the eliminations in the bout, submitting JBL with the STFU before being quickly eliminated by Orton with a punt to the head. After a long one-on-one showdown Triple H pinned Orton with a pedigree to win the title.

In the other title change at the event Matt Hardy defeated MVP with a clean twist of fate to pick up the United States Title.

Kane pinned foe Chavo Guerrero with a chokeslam to retain the ECW championship and Undertaker submitted Edge via gogoplata to keep the heavyweight title.

What repercussions will the title changes have? What fallout will we see from the PPV? Only time will tell though we will have a good indication of what is to come following tonight’s edition of Monday night Raw.

Undertaker Retains Championship on SmackDown

As indicated by the results above Undertaker retained the world heavyweight championship last night on SmackDown, pinning Batista after a sweet chin music assist from Shawn Michaels helped the deadman pick up the no DQ victory. The title was on the line at SmackDown for the first time in months and so was a spot to face Edge at Backlash though Undertaker ultimately prevailed.

Also on SmackDown Natalya defeated Cherry in her in-ring debut and Vladimir Kozlov remained undefeated in the WWE since debuting earlier this month.

The stage is now set for Sunday’s Backlash pay-per-view. Stay tuned to JabandGrapple.com for results from the WWE PPV.

UFC 85: Three Major Fights Announed For London PPV

This afternoon the UFC announced three additional fights for UFC 85 in London, England at the O2 Arena. Announced today were Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves, Rashad Evans vs. James Irvin, and Michael Bisping vs. Chris Leben.

UFC 85 airs live on pay-per-view on June 7th at 3pm ET.

Poor match booking from top to bottom this week on ECW. I’m struggling to find anything in the entire hour worthy passing along. The “Familia” as they’re now being called with Edge, Vickie Guerrero, Chavo, and others, attacked Kane in what I guess you could call the main event, even though it wasn’t a match. Giving the group a name is semi-useful. It was getting pretty confusing as it kept growing and the simple title goes a long way in helping keep its members straight.

I am glad Kane is getting a push, though giving him the ECW title so quick was quirky in the least. It’s showing with the same old, same old every week and nothing is going to pump the fans up for the title match at Backlash. I think given time it could develop into something, either with the “Familia” and Chavo or another opponent, but giving Kane the title in the fashion he did, an absolute squash at Wrestlemania, and then expecting fans to buy into a legit match just seems odd. I’d love to be surprised but my expectations for Sunday’s match are really, really low.

Regal Crowned King of the Ring on Raw

Though the tournament had hype the participants, and eventual winner, of the WWE’s King of the Ring tournament left much to be desired. Many felt that King of the Ring had massive potential this time around, and in my eyes the concept does still have its merits, but when William Regal, the Raw GM and rare wrestler these days, is crowned King it’s quite obsious something is amiss but that was the cast this week. To little fanfare Regal captured the crown and not much else on Monday night.

In all honesty I thoroughly enjoyed the presidential match storyline they promoted. It’s reminiscent of a lot of similar lines in the past but I felt the over the top characters made it the most memorable match of the night.

The wrap up – Raw failed on so many levels this week and King of the Ring really fell flat. Raw needs a storyline pronto, though I like the direction of Michaels-Batista its reach is limited, and I think a title change is needed this weekend at Backlash to give Raw a spark heading into summer.

STAMFORD, Conn., April 21, 2008 — The night before an important Pennsylvania primary, Presidential candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain will each make a very special appearance on a three-hour edition of WWE®’s “Monday Night RAW” tonight on the USA Network starting at 8 p.m. ET.

The three Presidential candidates intend to tap into the power of the more than five million viewers who each week tune in to watch RAW, making it the number one weekly year round show on cable. In particular, Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama will be appealing for votes from WWE fans in Pennsylvania, where they are locked in a tight primary battle. An invitation from the WWE to have Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama appear on RAW to settle the Democratic nomination process in the wrestling ring was the catalyst for tonight’s appearances by the three top Presidential contenders, who each will address the WWE audience in specially taped messages.

Boxing: Byrd’s Light Heavyweight Debut Set For May 16th

Free-agent former two-time heavyweight titleholder Chris Byrd, who is moving down to light heavyweight, has signed with promoter Artie Pelullo’s Banner Promotions.

“I’ve been a fan and friend of Chris’ for a long time, and I’m looking forward very much to working with him,” Pelullo said. “I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people, but Chris — the former two-time heavyweight champ — is going to be fighting at 175 pounds. I think he’s going to make some great fights in the division, and I think he’s going to win the world championship.”

Byrd will make his debut at light heavyweight on May 16th in the main event of “Friday Night Fights,” which airs on ESPN 2. No opponent has been named for the feature attraction but is expected to be announced shortly and Jab and Grapple will pass it along as soon as it is announced.
