Nog Wins War Against Couture at UFC 102

September 1, 2009 by Ryan Harkness

Randy Couture fought a valiant fight but it wasn’t enough: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira defeated him in a three round fight that saw Big Nog take the decision off of knockdowns and submission attempts. Couture managed to stay in the fight right up to the final bell, but there was no doubt in anyone’s mind who won the fight. UFC 102 Poster - Image: Ultimate Fighting Championships Also winning in this fight were the fans, who witnessed what has to be a fight of the year candidate if I ever saw one. From slugging on the feet to near-finish submission escapes, this fight blew away quietly confident expectations and really reminded everyone why both fighters are legends of the sport. Even I was wishing the fight could have lasted two more... [Read more]

Strikeforce announces Fedor vs Brett Rogers

Strikeforce has announced Fedor Emelianenko’s first opponent, and it will be none other than hard hitting Cinderella man Brett ‘the Grim’ Rogers. The news was announced at an open training session in New York, and has many people divided on how they feel. Fedor Emelianenko - Image: Zuma Press Here’s the deal: so long as Fedor – considered by many to be the best MMA fighter on the planet – isn’t in the UFC, there’ll be a whole segment of fans who won’t be happy with any of the opponents he faces. To them, it’s Brock or bust. Or at least Randy Couture or something! Having Fedor in Strikeforce is like keeping a whale in a fish bowl. But that’s not entirely fair. There are a few moderately... [Read more]

Shaq beats on Oscar de la Hoya

Shaquille O’Neal has a new TV show called Shaq VS where he takes on top athletes in challenges that are skewed his way. Not just skewed because Shaq is a freaking giant … he also gets head starts, score handicaps, and all sorts of other things. So basically there’s very little point to these competitions past whether these athletes can outperform some random Shaq-related benchmark. Shaquille O'Neal - Image: JR Davis via Newscom Below you can see Shaq boxing it up with Oscar De La Hoya for an episode that will air on ABC September 8th. The week after, he’ll try to outswim lazy pothead Michael Phelps and then after that: unknown. I guess ABC wants to make sure the show doesn’t tank before ordering more episodes. Still,... [Read more]

Next week’s WEC delayed till October

If the last World Extreme Cagefighting event got you hooked and you were really looking forward to another night of awesome fights, I have some bad news for you: they have just delayed next Wednesday’s show until October 10th on account of an undisclosed injury to co-headliner Benson Henderson. WEC 43v Poster - Image: WEC A legitimate question to ask would be why the WEC would cancel an entire event over one fighter who isn’t even a star attraction in any sense of the word. I’m wondering that right along with you, but if I was a betting man I’d say the reason is because of a stupid tiff between DirectTV and the Versus channel. Basically, Versus wants more money to be on DirectTV because they’re no longer as crappy... [Read more]

Anderson Silva moving to heavyweight?

August 24, 2009 by Ryan Harkness

Anderson Silva apparently isn’t content bouncing between middleweight and light heavyweight. A report from Sports Illustrated recently stated that the 185 pound champion wants to move up to heavyweight and compete with the big boys. The fighter SI claims Silva has his eye on: Frank Mir, who beat Silva’s friend and training partner Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira back at UFC 92. Anderson Silva - Image: Zuma Press This is pretty crazy news, but Anderson has been chasing a challenge for the past two years and hasn’t been able to find one even after taking a few fights at light heavyweight. Not only should fights at heavyweight satisfy that need, but it will also set Silva up for some huge paydays. So how did we end up here? The UFC’s... [Read more]
