Bad Economy= Smaller Waistline

Welp. The economy sucks. We all know that. WaMu was sold, which is causing everyone in Washington to fly into a panic. Good thing for trusty Bank of America.
Also, Christmas is coming. Im flying to PA to see my sister and neice and nephew for the holiday, and after checking CheapTickets.com (psh, if you say so) I’ve gotta start saving my little pennies. The longer I wait the higher the prices are going to get, so I have to book soon. PLUS there are the gifts. Oh Good Lord, the gifts.
SO for the next few months I will be scrimping and saving. As I thought of all the ways I could cut back, contrary to how others are responding to the economy, I saw many opportunities to get in some exercise and eat a little healthier as well:
- I will walk whenever possible, instead of driving. This includes the grocery store, the bank and anywhere in my near vacinity.
- I will FINALLY use all the food in my fridge that has been there forever. Foodie Friday may get interesting.
- I will plan ahead when packing food for work instead of running to Subway when I forget.
- No more going out to eat for dinner, and no more grabbing a pitcher with the boy at the local bar when we can pick up a six pack for cheaper
- I will work out at my work or at home instead of driving to the gym.
How else does living a healthy lifestyle help you guys save money?
And if you want to help me out a bit, you can hit this site as often as humanly possible. My wallet (and maybe even Santa) will thank you ;)

ughhhhh I know, everything is so expensive! The food store is out of control!
Risotto is SO easy to make…I do not lie. You just add liquid, mix, mix, mix (repeat) taste it after you’ve added most of the liquid to see if it tastes done (i.e. is soft not hard).
I’ve been reading you faithfully through my feeder, but I’ll make a conscious effort to actually click through now.
Also, to maybe save you $$ on airfare, check out the way I saved $200 a ticket: http://allthumbsreviews.blogspot.com/2008/08/farecast-and-my-800-windfall.html
I have been walking everywhere lately, too. I walked to the grocery store, it was such a pain carrying all my groceries back! I do also plan on working out at home more frequently instead of driving to the gym. Soon there is a new gym that I’m already a member of opening up a mile away, so I’m glad I can walk/run there!
I’m clicking around. :)
This summer we put a garden in the back yard to grow our own organic produce and save cash. Next year, I have plans to make it even bigger and better!
Erica- I pretty much always buy the same stuff at the store and bill keeps getting higher and higher. pretty soon Ill be subsisting on gruel.
Lori- lol, thanks. and thanks for the link, ill check it out tonight. and i better not get a virus if I click on that link or you’re in trouble….
Nicole- i know! i want to run to the store so the trip isnt so long, but then I have to carry a purse. and i cant take my dog cause someone will steal him because he is so adorable.
FBG-lol, thanks. the netwrok may shoot me for illiciting clicks.
planting your own is a good idea.i was thinking about it over the summer, but the weather here is so hit and miss and my green thumb is more of an overripe, worm infested one, so i dont know how lucritive that would be for me.
I’m saving money, by not buying another coach, dooney, or burberry. Also saving my husband from having a heart attack, from seeing the bill from such purchases. I’m a good wife like that. :) Hope you’re doing well. {{Hugs}}
Yeah, once I started noticing food prices going up (and my budget strangely not), I realized I had to start cutting back. First to go? Treats and processed crap. Sure the kids whined a bit but, let’s be honest, they do that anyhow.
Great ideas!
It’s not always cheaper to buy tickets early, I booked my ticket to Chicago early and then just out of curiousity checked it 2 days before I left and they had a last minute deal for 100 bucks less then I paid for mine, it can be stressful but last minute can be the way to go!
Bret and I used to go out 2 or 3 times a week and the meal usually included wine and dessert, now it’s more like twice a month and we never get wine and usually no dessert either. All the rich food, alcohol, and extra desserts weren’t necessary anyway!
My solution to no money is usually to work some overtime. Aside from the obvious reason, working more keeps me busy and keeps me away from the mall :D
I booked Christmas flights in AUGUST and I’m still cringing at the cost.
Well let’s see…
I’ve spent lots ‘o cash on doc appts. for running injuries. The latest one was this morning, so I think I’m just very preoccupied with it right now.
My healthy food is expensive, but I HAVE cut down drastically on eating out, so I’ll call that a draw.
Running shoes, gym membership, race fees, etc. All expensive.
I just hope keeping myself healthy now keeps me out of the hospital later. Right now, it may actually be costing me money.
But money well spent, nonetheless
I am just glad it is just the bf and me to feed. Well, and a cat. Seriously I don’t know how you people with kids do it.
I thought I’d just find a rich boyfriend to pay for all my meals and buy me drinks.
Amen Kootz, amen.
Hey Kelly,
I hear you on the bad economy effecting our general health. It sucks, I feel guilty going to Whole Foods for anything because it’s expensive! But I found an awesome post on Mark’s Daily Apple that I linked to in a short post over on my site. It’s got some great tips on there, you should check it out.
