If you are looking for start up capital, you may want to think about joining the US Army.Uncle Sam Wants You

According to the Wall Street Journal, Uncle Sam will soon be offering $25,000 to help start your own business, if you sign up for a three year stint. The money will increase if you decide to up for four or five years.

And they’re not the only one’s offering such incentives. The U.S. Small Business Administration is granting low-interest loans up to $500,000 to U.S. veterans, some active-service members and military spouses to help them start a business as well.

Look, we all know the military needs more personnel. But is this a good way to recruit? What’s your take on this. Leave a comment and let me know.

  1. It seems like a good idea, at first but I have to disagree. The whole thought process of joining the military (at least during the post draft/post Vietnam era) goes contrary to the Independent thinking of an entrepreneur.

If I had an idea to start my own business and was of the mind or creating new ideas, being my own boss, etc. I was go crazy and become very depressed having to work in an environment where I would have to for all practical purposes blindly follow orders, go by uninnovative procedures, etc.

On the other hand I could she where working for the military as a civilian in a research or other product development capacity could give you good experience in innovation, a steady and higher paycheck you could save up, etc.

All that being said some people could make a go of it and do well and the experiences of discipline and having to come up with innovation solutions in emergency situations could help.

Personally I wish we had a bigger army of small business people who had to pay their own taxes, medicial bills, etc. A small business army where the only war is competition fostering intense innovation.

My husband is a vet, but I know he’d never take advantage of this type of opportunity. Says he’s not the work-from-home entrepreneur type. I say anyone offering a $500K start-up loan makes me the type, right away!

You just have to live through a war in order to collect, not a bad deal.
