Beer Snobs

I myself am not a beer snob.  For the most part I stick to a few brands of beer, mostly lagers, some ales, but rarely do I drink heavy dark beers, or pilsners.  A couple of weeks ago I met a girl who is a brewmaster for a small well known brewery here in Toronto, which is a pilsner.  We were talking, getting to know each other and since I knew she worked in the brewing industry I asked her what her favourite beers were.  Big mistake.  She started to name a huge list of beers, most of which I had never heard of, and I have been to the Toronto Beer Festival twice!  After what seemed like 45 minutes of listing off her favourite beers and telling me about her various beer based vacations to the rockies and europe, probably the Duff brewery too,she then began to list off her least favourite beers, many of which happened to be some of my favourite beers.  She went on and on about how the people who buy these beers are mindless and ignorant and are only influenced byadvertising and, the media and celebrity culture blah blah blah.  When she had finally finished ranting about how horrible normal beer and society is she smiled and asked me what some of my favourite beers were.  I told her that they were some of her least favourite beers, and that I worked in the advertising field and enjoy media.  Her smile disappeaered, and thankfully so did she not long after.

good to know she disappeared.. some people just have no manners.. don’t worry there are plenty of other fish in the sea (a sea of beer? beer is good.)

The problem is that msot people don’t really know of the different varieties of beer outside of what’s on most store shelves. Unless you’re a beer connoisseur and read and search about beers constantly then how the hell is one to know what is out there. I don’t like many American beers, with the exception of a few American wheat beers and a few special brews here and there. I dig Heineken and Belgian wheat beers. I’m very open minded when it comes to beer and I like to try different things. There is no point in being a beer snob. Some people like their beer simple and cheap and drink it for no more than two reasons, a) they like the taste. And b) they want to get drunk. For those type of people (which we all can be sometimes) beer is beer. Some people outgrow simple domestic beers and some just like to stick to what they know.
