Big 12 Athlete of the Year – Will Daniel Head for the Heisman in 2008?

19 April 2008: Chase Daniel looks to throw during the Missouri Tigers annual spring game at Faurot Field in Columbia, MO. Missouri’s Chase Daniel was a Heisman contender in 2007. A year later, do experts think that he could be a 2008 contender, possibly winning it all?

Although Daniel has been criticized for being a “non-pro” player (ie, many don’t think he’ll draft well or play well in the NFL), he was recently named the Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year. This isn’t just a football award – this is a complete conference sports award. Last year, the award went to another Tiger – Ben Askren, a former wrestler for Missouri.

“What a great honor, this is a really special award to have your name attached to,” said Daniel. “There are so many great athletes in this league in all the sports, it means a lot to be chosen over everyone else. I’d like to accept the award on behalf of my teammates and coaches, I know you have to put one person’s name on the award, but I really see this as our team being rewarded for everything we did together,”

I absolutely believe that Daniel could go on to win the Heisman this year. I don’t think the Missouri team will be a BCS Championship team in 2008, but that doesn’t automatically mean that Daniel isn’t the best player out there. And hey, teams have proven me wrong before.
