Bill Gates and the Next Step in Motion Sensing Gaming

Speaking at the D5 conference, Microsoft Guru, Bill Gates, moved into the subject of motion sensing technology for video games.

“Software is doing vision and so, you know, imagine a game machine where you’re just going to pick up the bat and swing it or the tennis racket and swing it,” explained Gates.

The moderator at the presentation then suggested that Gates was simply describing the Wii, to which Gates replied: “No, that’s not it. You can’t pick up your tennis racket. And swing it.”

The next step in motion sensing would then become the utilization of real world objects to control the gaming environment.

I’m not sure how I feel about swinging a bat around my living room. If the wiimote caused that much havoc, I can’t imagine what a bat and a tennis racket are going to do to TV sets everywhere.

That said, I think the Wii has proven that motion sensing has a very definitive place in the video game world. It’s just a matter of waiting to see what comes next. I’m sure Bill Gates and Co. will be coming up with some innovative ways to try and best the Wii. But I’m sure Nintendo isn’t sitting around doing nothing.
