Bill Parcells gone, Bill Cowher gone, Art Shell gone, Romeo Crennel here!

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Romeo says – Hey we just had a few injuries…

Romeo CrennelOver the xmas break your intrepid author managed to visit a waterpark in Sandusky Ohio. Now most of you know me as an avowed and committed Lions fan. Of course, all Lions fans have to be committed at one time or another in their lives.

Anyway, being in Ohio, the Sports pages were filled with Cleveland Browns news. Romeo Crennel was in trouble. Romeo, if you don’t know, is the Coach with one of the coolest names on the planet.

Romeo has the coaching bloodlines of a prize bloodhound. He coached under Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells. It did not matter, because his team was in trouble.

This is the good part.

The article went on and on about how the Browns underachieved and it was time to go in a different direction. It was pointed out that several key players were injured and a star player did not respond to Romeo’s coaching (Braylon Edwards).

The article continued to mention how the GM, Phil Savage, had a friend that happened to be a coach and he would be a perfect fit for the Browns. Oh, and at the time, there was a lot of Bill Cowher and Jeff Fisher talk.

What struck me about all this is that several teams in the league could have taken the same article and just substituted different team, coach, star player, and GM names and it would have been the same.

Just substitute Art Shell, Randy Moss, the Raiders, and Al Davis, or try Rod Marinelli, Shaun Rogers, the Lions, and Bozo the Clown…er Matt Millen. It is all the same.

Shouldn’t someone point out to these owners that the fans knew their team stunk and would not win many games to begin with?

When your team wins, the coach is brilliant, the star is happy or just puts up with it, and the GM has no friends.

Now you see it. The teams needed more talent to work with, not new coaches.

The lucky few, like Bill Parcells or Bill Cowher, get to walk away from their team. The slightly less lucky learn the NFL is not for them and can move to the college ranks, like Nick Saban.

But for most coaches, the writers will be pulling out the pre-made form, filling out the Coach, Star Player, Team name, GM, and mentioning injuries. That article will be published; the coach will sweat for a while, and then have a good chance of getting fired.

Romeo survived! So did Rod Marinelli at Detroit, but Art Shell did not.

Maybe the owners saw the lack of talent and believed they could fix that and still win. Who knows?

NFL Football Fan Question Is your coach safe next year or is the lack of talent apparent?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.

To compare Matt Millen to Bozo the clown is an insult (to Bozo). Oh and, Saban still sucks.

and nobody can deny. For he’s a jolly good manager, for he’s a jolly good clown…

You gotta let this Saban thing go, he is just a traveling salesman. What if he is the ‘Traveler’ posing as a football coach? (inane Star Trek reference)
