Bill Says Screw DRM, Just Rip It

It seems Bill Gates is in touch with reality and understands that DRM is just a pain in butt for most people. Of course it’s necessary though, I don’t fault any company for trying to protect their business interests and profitability. The problem is it just gets in the way. If I purchase a digital copy of the song, why can’t I have the same rights with it as I would if I bought the original CD. Make a copy of it, play it on any device with no hurdles to jump through.
Bill agrees
People should just buy a cd and rip it. You are legal then.
The ForeverGeek article goes onto to expand their idea of a person’s right to songs after they purchase them on CD and rip them. Can they copy it anywhere and play it on any device? Can they make a copy and give it to friends? If they sell the CD in the future, should they delete their ripped copies of the songs?
Let us know about your privacy opinions in our new poll. In this poll I’ve allowed you to vote more than once, so if you think you have the right to do multiple options. Vote for each one.

The poll is kind of difficult in that I agree with both “Copies for any device you own” and “Delete copies if you sell the CD.”
I think this is a pretty common sense issue. When you legally acquire music (whether it be CD, vinyl, cassette, iTunes, whatever), you are able to legally play the song yourself. You can play it on your PC, on your sterio, on your portable CD player, on your MP3 player.
You cannot give it to your friends anymore than you can make one ticket to one baseball game get two people in. And if they sell the CD, they no longer have the right to play the song on any of their devices. Once you sell something, it is no longer yours. That’s part of the definition of selling, I think.
Patrick, I agree with you. For this poll, you can also choose more than one answer. You just vote multiple times.
Cool. :) Sorry, didn’t catch that last paragraph. Doh! For some reason, I can’t find a way to vote again, though. I tried refreshing.
