Birds (feathered kind) Crash ATC Radar

November 16, 2005 by admin

Last week a large flock of Geese was told to contact the tower upon landing…. they had crashed ATC radar computers. Early Wednesday morning thousands of geese started to appear on ATC radar in St. Louis. Apparently the computer system couldn’t quite keep up with thousands of new “aircraft” in the airspace and the system became overloaded and crashed.

Kansas City ATC took over while St. Louis controllers switched to a secondary radar service a few minutes later. The FAA is investigating exactly what caused the system to crash and would like tail numbers from any of the Geese known to be migrating through the area.
