Personally this session was the best one that I attended. Both Chris and Jeremiah were dynamic speakers that also had an amazing amount of knowledge.

Create a Coherent Social Media Strategy
Jeremiah Owyang, Chris Brogan
1)    community
2)    business
3)    technology

Do you listen? Engage in the conversation
Track what is being said about you and your company
1)    setup google alert around your brand
2)    do it for your competitors
3)    use tools like ice rocket and technorati

Need to make things more conversational
-forums
-pligg (?)
-social networks

when someone says something bad
traditional response is: -pretend you don’t see it or fire back
now-say thank you for the feedback

Example campaign- Dove’s Real Beauty
-campaign exists on multiple mediums
-message across multiple platforms

Hitachi Data Systems (Jeremiah Set Up Their Web Strategy)

-holistic strategy
-measured metrics early

Executive Blog for Hitachi

-link to anyone talking about us
-thought leadership
-global discussion
-sales tools
-living white paper- a new brochure every time
-ongoing training
-rapid response tool

Online forums build community- bringing users to the party
-user to user support
-built community
-integrated pictures and other media
-reduced support calling

Community over Vendor
-an industry wiki
-provides an index for the industry (not just hitachi products)

-not branded!!!!!

Being helpful can only help your company
-blogs, wiki, message boards are huge

The major lesson I learned here is that all of these different tactics bring traffic to your site… Wait that isn’t the important lesson. The important lesson is that by being a leader in the community and actually providing people tools that they can use, while being part of the overall conversation establishes you as not only a leader but a company that people respect and go to as a source because they feel you aren’t all about yourself. And I guess when it boils down to it, isn’t that the way we should all act? Be a source for information, be helpful, and not make it all about yourself.
