Blogging For a Living? Imagine That

This article by Yahoo! lists 10 careers that are burgeoning and they speculate that we’ve probably never heard of. Careers like a Nurse Informatic (it’s not misspelled), and Experience Designer (sounds pretty cool) and a Blogger are all on the list. Whilst the Internet is full of bloggers going online everyday with both personal and professional blogs, I don’t think it’s necessarily a new idea anymore. Maybe perhaps it’s starting to become respected as a viable way to make an income, but new it ain’t.

Another one on the list that’s an eye-catcher for me is the Personal Chef. I think I mentioned in a previous post about how I’d love to have one – - a Personal Chef that is. But I haven’t found one yet that can cook soul food. Real soul food, that is. You know, smothered chicken, gravy, REAL mashed potatoes, candid yams, things like that. I guess I’ll keep looking…

Anyway, the blogging career is definitely one that anyone with a business of any size should always keep their eye on. Blogging keeps you in touch with your customers, keeps your finger on the pulse of what they want, what they’re looking for, what they need and how you can carve out a niche. Blogging is becoming the way to go. Liz and Laura over at Business and Blogging are always writing and analyzing on the multiple benefits of having a blog to go along with your business. Definitely a must-read.

If you’re interested in blogging for fun or for a living, check into it and see if it’s something you can make happen. Doesn’t take a lot to get started and can be done fairly easily. Another site that offers a wealth of information is Darren Rowse’s ProBlogger site. How-to’s, marketing tips and strategies and his own personal account of making a living can be found as he blogs about these things daily. I’d make that my first stop.

Is blogging something that you’re doing now in your business? Is it something you’re considering doing in the future?

Girl, you took the words RIGHT out of my mouth! I just signed in to write about this very article! I was like, “Dude, Yahoo, everyone knows about blogging now!” But I have to admit, I’d never heard about nursing informatics, nor did I know that welding was so hot these days (no pun intended). Way to stay on top of the news!

  2. Kristen, please go ahead and give us your perspective about the blogging career. I’d love to know what you think. Blog away!

  3. nicole says:

i would totally blog for a living…where do i get a gig like that?!!!

  4. Nicole, do you currently have your own business?

  5. nicole says:

unfortunately i do not…im thinking about doing freelance PR though…i handle all the pr for a tech company…and im a freelance journalist occasionally on the side.

  6. Kristen King says:

Nicole, what’s stopping you? Go for it, girl!

  7. Ditto what Kristen said. Go for it. What information can Kristen and I offer you to help you get started on your business idea?

After all, we are Biz Chicks…and we do Rule!

  8. Kristen King says:

    Word!

  9. nicole says:

thanks girls! i know, i really need to get on it…ill have to put some thought into it.

  10. Kristen King says:

Let us know what we can do. We’re all over it, girl.

  11. Darolyn says:

Yes, it is something that I’m considering and I’ve started a blog site to get going. However, I just get stuck when inserting an image becomes an issue!! As soon as I overcome the need to have everything look perfect….I’ll start writing!!

  12. Kristen King says:

@Darolyn – Don’t let perfectionism hold you back, babe. Nothing is ever perfect, and waiting for perfection means waiting forever! Everything is a work in progress. That’s what makes it fun! Embrace it.

  13. Thanks for this Bridget!

Not only do I think that there will be more opportunities for blogs like the ones where I write, I also think that it will be more common for some medium to large businesses to have someone in charge of all social media (including blogging) on a full-time basis.

  14. Laura, I actually got an offer for a social media manager blog position today based off of this post! Don’t know about it though. I have such fun just blogging, I don’t know if it would be as much fun to manage blogging systems.

  15. Kristen King says:

Wow, Bridget, that is super cool!

  16. Thanks Kristen!

Since you’re a pro blogger as well, what would you do? Do you think “social media managing” is worth it in terms of gratification or a stable future?

  17. Darolyn says:

    Thanks Kristen!

You’re absolutely right! Thanks for the encouragement!

  18. Kristen King says:

@Bridget – Let me think on this a little and get back to you…

  19. Kristen King says:

@Darolyn – Sometimes we insist on perfection as a way to avoid starting. (I think I may have invented that trick. ;]) You can do it! The learning process is what makes the whole thing worthwhile. Truly. Keep us posted.
