ESPN is reporting that Texas Tech head coach Bobby Knight has resigned effective immediately. His son Pat, who is an assistant coach, has taken over the head coaching duties.
Something doesn’t seem right to me. Knight, the all-time NCAA wins leader with 902, doesn’t seem like a quitter to me in any way. He could have easily quit as the Indiana head coach with all the problems he was facing, but he chose to stay on and forced Miles Brand to fire him.
I find it hard to believe that Knight would simply walk away from the job mid-season unless something else was wrong. I hope it isn’t a health issue – Knight is 67 years old.
In any case, he has cemented his legacy as one of the top coaches in the history of college basketball, as well as one of the most controversial coaches.
