Bonds to the Diamondbacks?

That’s the latest rumor on the fledgling career of slugger Barry Bonds. Bonds has said that he would be interested in still playing, yet no team has picked him up. We have already passed the halfway point of the baseball season, so what team would even be interested in signing him?
According to ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption, the Arizona Diamondbacks are seriously considering it.
Sitting just around .500 for the season, the Diamondbacks need to make some kind of move before the trade deadline if they want to have a shot at the playoffs. They are need of some offense and Bonds would provide an offensive boost. Like him or not, the guy can hit the ball.
Josh Byrnes, General Manager for the D-Backs, said on Tuesday “He and maybe a couple of others are sort of sitting out there.” He wouldn’t go on to speculate but further addressed the lack of offense within his club:
(From the D-Backs website) “There’s sort of a fine line between patience and stubbornness,” Byrnes said. “But if we’re going to do something to improve our offense, it’s sort of [a question of] whose at-bats are we replacing, and what is that saying about an offense that at the end of last year, beginning of this year, looked like it was sort of taking a step forward? It’s not as simple as the last couple of months, although the last couple of months we haven’t swung the bats very well. Certainly sticking with guys who have shown it, and are young enough to start showing progress, is a consideration.”
Would Bonds be the the offense spark they need or is he not worth the controversy and media attention? That’s for the D-Backs to decided.
Ironically enough, Bonds hit homerun number 750 against Arizona. Here’s the footage, courtesy of YouTube:

I heard on sports radio this morning that the Diamondbacks considered picking up Bonds but decided to pass. I can’t remember what source the host was citing though.
