(www.bizchicksrule.com) — Marilyn Carson Nelson was named one of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women by Forbes and one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report, so her recent release, How We Lead Matters: Reflections on a Life of Leadership, promised to be authoritative if nothing else. After all, the lady is chairman and CEO of Carlson, which encompasses Radisson and Regent hotels and resorts, Park Plaza hotels, T.G.I. Friday’s restaurants, and a host of other household names. She’s also on the Boards of ExonMobile and the Mayo Clinic Foundation, among others.
In short, Nelson is a leader.
Although, according to the introduction, the book started out as a collection of memories for Carlson’s grandchildren, it has indeed turned into a guidebook for leaders that offers essential principles, encouragement, and inspiration. Each of the 60 anecdotes included in How We Lead Matters is just a page long, so this is the perfect pick-me-up to keep at your desk and peruse when you need a little boost. Opposite each of Nelson’s memories is a quote from a well-known, or perhaps not so, leader that dovetails with her message.
If you like to read about the experiences and advice of successful businesswomen, and appreciate simple wisdom, you’ll love How We Lead Matters. Hi Kristen
Thanks for the review of this book. I had not heard of it – but it sounds like it would interesting to read, and re-read!
Liz
Hi, Liz,
Thanks for your comment! I think this is one of those books that never gets old because every time you read it you’ll be in a different place and different parts of it will speak to you. You know what I mean?
Kristen
Definitely picking this one up. I think all women who lead (doesn’t that include all of us?) should understand effective leadership. Too often we’re mired in micromanagement in order to prove ourselves to male colleagues. I much prefer a more self-directed approach, and a trust in those who work for me.
Great observations, Lori. I think you will really enjoy this one. :)

A different thought here. I’m pretty big on these 2 features of Amazon; the look inside the book and reviews. But, as may happen, in this case that’sust not too informative.
However, if one visits the website of the author, she has a video ( short: under 2 mins ) that gives a better insight about the book. She’ll talk about two lenses that pertain to her book. That definitely got me interested.
Ah crud; edit sentence above to read
” in this case, that’s just not too informative “.
Any chance you’d ad the ability to let us edit our own typos ? Typing is just not my forte.
Ayn Elise, yes, the video is very helpful, far more than the Amazon features. Glad you liked it!
I wish there was a way to edit comments after the fact, but unfortunately I don’t have control over that kind of stuff. Maybe one day!

Kristen-
Thanks for answering the question regarding comment editing. Kinda what I thought, but if your readers don’t ask, your network may not consider it. :)
Ayn Elise, that’s very true!
