After losing to Greece in the semis, Chris Bosh was sure to make clear his desire to win the consolation game.
I want to go home with something. Fourth place, I’ll be walking home with a sandwich.
Chris got his bronze medal and “walked home” in need of sustinance, you know, because he didn’t have a sandwich. Maybe he had some soup. All the while, some Argentinian was probably happily munching away on his sandwich thinking, “I was really hungry, I’m glad we finished fourth.” Little known fact: The fourth place team at the Worlds actually is awarded a sandwich, specifically a Monte Cristo. It is actually fairly commonplace practice for the runner-up or fourth place team to receive sandwiches as consolation prizes. Here’s a short list of other examples, listing the event and the runner-up’s prize.
- Super Bowl – Primanti
- Final Four (all three non-winners) – Sloppy Joes
- Stanley Cup – Baloney and Yellow Mustard on White
- Kentucky Derby – Grilled Kentucky Derby Loser on Rye
- Little League World Series – Grilled Cheese, with Tomato Soup!
- American Idol – Reuben
- Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl – Hamburger
- World Cup – Panini
- Olympic Decathalon – BLT
- Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest – Cheesesteak
- US Presidential Elections – Po’ Boy
