The negotiations between The Boston Globe and its union will continue. The negotiations have taken a lot of twists and turns in recent weeks but now the two sides are going to meet back at the table on Monday. Earlier in the month of June, the union narrowly defeated a contract that would have ended the negotiations.

The basis of these talks is the newspaper wanting to cut $10 million from the salaries and benefits it is paying out to union workers. With the newspaper industry in turmoil, The Boston Globe says that they need these concessions to stay afloat and avoid shutting down the newspaper.
After the union defeated the previous contract offer, The Boston Globe instituted a 23% salary cut across the board in an effort to save the needed $10 million. In response, the union filed a federal complaint.
It’ll be interesting to see if the two sides will be able to agree at this latest meeting. Many experts believe that the union in this scenario can be more stubborn because shutting down The Boston Globe would be such a monumental moment in the newspaper industry that the company may not actually be willing to take that ultimate step.
