A dedicated hardware box is on the way for open-source PC-to-TV media player Boxee. Details are few, but here’s what we know.

Boxee is a free software platform that combines your personal media (like photos, videos, and music) with Internet-only video and music (such as YouTube or Hulu content), and social networking. It’s touted as easy to use to access all different forms of media with a single remote control, but to do any of it, you first have to connect your computer to your television. The fact that it’s both free and open source has made it a fast favorite of many users, even though it’s only in an alpha build at the moment. (A beta version is expected in early December.)
Boxee’s blog indicates that a “Boxee Box” is on the way — the first piece of hardware designed solely to run the Boxee software and store your media (similarly to how Apple TV works). The Boxee Box will be unveiled at a special event in Brooklyn on December 7th, giving anyone the ability to run Boxee on their television with no need for connecting their computer.
Boxee isn’t saying who their hardware partner is for the Boxee Box, but promises to reveal this at the Brooklyn event as well. They also indicate that this is expected to be just the first of more Boxee devices soon to come.
