Consumer Electronics Show is underway and a number of gadgets are geared towards Internet TV and one of the better items so devices so far is Boxee which allows you to play movies in your hard drives as well as movies from YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, Shoutcast, Flickr, Last.fm, Picasa, CNN, CBS, etc. Above all, it lets you do it for free.

Aside from this, Boxee offers navigation via remote control which is perfect for coach potato viewing time.

Currently, Boxee only runs on Intel-based MACs and linux machines; however, a Windows based version should be out. Why didn’t they create the Windows version first? This should be perfect for multimedia capabilities of Windows Vista.

  1. You’ve gotta bear in mind that Boxee is a fork of XBMC, and while XBMC now has an official Windows build, it’s a fairly recent thing.

It’s probably best not to count on any special Vista capabilities being accessed after Boxee’s Win32 release, either… unless they’re made huge modifications to the core (as the Media Portal folks have), then it’ll be pretty platform agnostic.
