Brazilian Coca-Cola Zero

What appears to be an account from the Brazillian Coco-Cola company, promoting Coke Zero is now following me on Twitter. Not sure if it is from the company or one of its agencies. But they give a very good example of what not to do with the service if you’re a brand.

Coke Zero twitter

They were created less than a week ago but only have 2 updates. They’re following nearly 5000 people – most probably by using a script as they’re not discriminating who they are following. I don’t speak Portuguese, nor, I guess, do many of the other people who they have followed. This is not conversation, this is not a credible use of social media, it’s just spam, plain and simple. Did you hear that Coke? You’re just spamming.

Oh my hell. What are they thinking? It’s a massive challenge to educate companies about the value of social media (particularly with the lack of metrics) and done wrong — ugh, all wrong — can only be horrible for brand image.

You should do a post on other big brands getting it way wrong in social media. Remember the Nike fiasco in Second Life last year? I’d love to see that!
