Brett Favre vs. LaDainian Tomlinson or maybe not

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Brett nailing down victory 149

Brett Favre (Dan Powers/Post-Crescent )Have you ever noticed the advertising scheme that the NFL uses?

The NBA uses the same thing.

What is it? They glamorize the players, not the teams.

It makes so much sense in basketball where one or two superstars can make a team. Up until the Pistons won recently, that was the pat formula. Get two superstars and a supporting cast. The Pistons changed that by just getting 5 really good players. Problem is, that makes them hard to market.

The NFL does the same thing. It is Peyton Manning vs. Rex Grossman, not the Colts vs. the Bears. Most of the time, they mix the two and it is Peyton Manning and the Colts vs. Rex Grossman and the Bears.

Well, now it is Brett Favre and the Packers vs. LT and the Chargers.

But you know it takes much more than 1 man to win a football game. Even if that 1 man is Brett or LT.

There is quite a bit at stake in this game.

Series leader: Packers, 7-1

Streaks: Packers have won the past four matchups.

A victory would give Green Bay a 3-0 start and establish the Packers as a contender in the NFC North along with the rival Bears. The Chargers need the win to avoid a 1-2 start and keep pace with the other powers in the AFC. source

NFL Tribute to Brett Favre With last weeks win over the Giants, Brett Favre has 149 victories overtaking John Elway for the NFL record.

It is the confidence of both teams that is on the line.

The Chargers just took a beat down from the Patriots and it remains to be seen if that has affected the Chargers in a negative or positive way.

By Simms’ accounting, the Chargers walked into the perfect storm in Foxborough – going on the road against a team that knew it was outplayed by San Diego in the playoffs last season and was eager to prove that victory was no fluke. Throw in “Videogate” and the Patriots had just what they wanted.

“The Patriots love to play the game of psychological warfare,” Simms said. “They can hold a grudge and can look for outside influences to drive them – that’s really part of their makeup as a team. They love that stuff.” source

There also is the new coach to take into account.

“It takes a while before you really learn the players,” he said. “Norv (Turner) is going to learn more about his players and how to get them in better position. He’s going to learn how to work the team with his actions and the environment he creates. As the year goes along, it will be more and more ‘Norv’s Place.’ ”

What about the slow start by Philip Rivers?

If LaDainian Tomlinson is off to a slow start, then Philip Rivers is being put into situations that he was not put into last year, so that’s different for him, too….

“When that happens, the defense can pin their ears back and come after him harder. So Philip Rivers has been in an environment as a quarterback that quarterbacks on the worst teams in the NFL face every week.

Packers

Think about what 3 wins will do for the Packers.

“For a young football team, 2-0 is a big confidence builder,” said John Schneider, the Packers’ personnel analyst to General Manager Ted Thompson. “Especially off the way they finished last year, the way guys have responded to each other, the way the locker room is, the cohesion in the locker room. There’s kind of momentum there. Ultimate team sport. I think (the 2-0 start) is huge.” source

Sometimes a win streak is all it takes to get the confidence going and when it is going and average team can be a very good team.

So, we have one team, the Chargers, trying to prove they never lost their confidence and trying to regain their winning form and another team, the Packers, trying to push their win streak to 7 and push their confidence to the sky!

But what happens to the team that loses?

Game Prediction

Gazing into the crystal ball the Squibster can see nothing. Who can? It is just a crystal ball.

Let’s pick the Chargers over the Packers as the overall talent level of the Chargers proves too much for a Packer team that struggles to run!

  1. Mike says:

James, are you picking the Chargers because the Lions fan in you is thinking the Lions will be in 1st place all alone for the 1st time since……..I can’t remember when? If they upset the Eagles.

  2. Geoff Young says:

Green Bay is always a tough place to win, and the Chargers haven’t been able to get their offense going at all. I don’t like SD’s chances in this one, but as you say, it is just a crystal ball…

  3. Rockwell says:

    James…

I’m with you on this one. And I know it is rare these days for you to pick a game (unlike some of us who foolishly go to the brink on picks every week).
What isn’t discussed here is how San Diego has played two very good defenses to open… and Green Bay may be good… but not as good as the Pats or the Bears on D.
And personally, I’m sick of the marketing folks. How absurd… Favre vs. LT. It’s really Favre vs. Merriman. The less the NFL pays attention to the NBA the better.

  4. James says:

    Mike,
The Lions in first place. Just imagine. Didn’t John Lennon right a song about just this thing?

  5. James says:

    Geoff,
You are suffering from too close to the situation itis. The Chargers are loaded with way more talent then the Packers. The Packers have a young (no pun) aggressive defense and and aging Brett.
The Chargers will be trying to avenge last week by taking it out on the Pack.

  6. James says:

If anyone is interested, check out Rockwell’s site for NFL predictions. Believe me, he is pretty darn good at it. Just link off of his comment above.

Also, Geoff writes a great baseball blog call Knucklecurve for B5 and you can find it in the sports list to the right.

And for all you frontal lobotomy Lions fans, check out Mike’s Lions blog Detroit Lions at Content Quake in the list of Blogs to the right.

  7. Rockwell says:

    James…

Thanks as always for the link.
I do think both the Pack and the Lions are going to make it more difficult to claim the NFC Central this year. That race will be more like the classic black and blue division for this year’s campaign. And the Vikes will be very inconsistent and hard to predict… so watch for some upsets from them.

  8. James says:

    Rock,
somehow they got our predictions wrong, didn’t we pick the Pack by a touchdown?

  9. Geoff Young says:

    Man, I wish I’d been wrong…

  10. Rockwell says:

I admit… I didn’t realize the extent of Norv Turner’s problems heading one of the most talented teams in the league… but my record shows I said they should have stuck with Marty.

That said, I’m 12-3 headed into tonight for the week… and I now must say I think the Packers are truly one of the best NFC teams… certainly a challenge even to Dallas. I thought the Pack was back… but not this far up.

  11. James says:

The Pack will still have to face my mighty Lions!

  12. James says:

    Geoff,
the Chargers still don’t have a whole lot to worry about. except maybe surviving Norv.
