Brewery battles back

Dixie Brewery

With Christmas over, my thoughts are increasingly turning towards the next holiday involving beer – Mardi Gras. Ok, well, Mardi Gras itself isn’t known for beer as much as it is for drunkenness, but other, similar festivals throughout the year are. In particularly I’m thinking of Fasching and Karneval, in Southern Germany and the area around Cologne respectively, but I’m sure there are others. In any event, I’ll be writing about those later in the month.

Back on the theme of Mardi Gras, I came across this article about the near-demise of the Dixie Brewing Company due to the devastation and subsequent looting of the brewery during hurricane Katrina. Dixie is just short of 100 years old, and efforts are currently underway to get the historic New Orleans brewery back into operation again. There’s no website, so it’s hard to tell how things are going, but I certainly wish the owners the best of luck in getting things up and runnin.

So, as Mardi Gras approaches, if you see some of that Dixie beer on the shelves of your local beer store grab a few, and help the process along a bit.
