Kyle Busch drove around Lowe’s Motor Speedway in just 29.121 seconds this past Thursday, and in doing so, took his first Coors Light Pole award in a 2008 points race, though he also sat on the pole for last weekend’s All-Star Challenge. Kyle’s lap was fast, but almost not fast enough. Trailing just behind him on the speed charts were Kasey Kahne and Brian Vickers, both of whom missed the pole position by less than 0.030 seconds. The Roush-Fenway cars of Greg Biffle and David Ragan will start fourth and fifth in Sunday’s race.

Fan favorite, Dale Earnhardt Jr. ran the sixth quickest on Thursday, and will start the Coca Cola 600 from the third row in search of his first win since 2006. Five-time Lowe’s winner, Jimmie Johnson, will start the race in tenth, and teammate, Jeff Gordon, qualified 18th. Several of the field’s other top drivers will start Sunday’s race towards the back of the field, including Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, and Clint Bowyer, all of whom qualified 30th or worse.

Dave Blaney earned himself one of his better qualifying positions and will beging the race in 11th, and Scott Riggs qualified 13th. Last week’s winner of the All-Star Showdown – the qualifying race for the All-Star Challenge – AJ Allmendinger qualified 27th. Ken Schrader was able to successfully qualify the Richard Childress Racing number 33 car in its debut race, and he will, ironically enough, begin the race from the 33rd spot.

  1. Ryan Newman's #1 says:

Who fixes up the qualifying order list? It seems like Kyle Busch always beats the driver’s fastest time because all the good people have gone before him. It gives him a chance to pace the pole sitter’s time. He’s always like the last one of the guys to qualify. So who chooses the order you qualify in?

I,m pretty sure they pick the numbers like out of jar or something I know its luck of the draw.

  3. Ryan Newman's #1 says:

Well ok, but I just find it strange that Kyle is always set to qualify at the back of the pack.

  4. Tim Zaegel says:

I think Roc’s right, I’m pretty sure that they just draw out of a jar or something. This is actually Busch’s first pole position in a points race this year, though.
