Business Blogging is Not Easy

There is no doubt that it’s easy to set up a blog.

Setting up a blog so that it’s fully integrated with your overall business strategy, then developing it as part of your business and managing it in a businesslike way is another story.

In her brief, excellent (and free!) Change This manifesto, “It’s a Big, Blog World Out There”, Meryl K. Evans writes:
“Blogging is hard. It requires discipline and a thick skin. To succeed means thinking of new topics, writing about those topics, reading other blogs to join the conversations, and contributing on a regular basis.” (p 4)

That doesn’t mean it can’t be fun, just as a tough game in any sport can be fun, just as grappling with and finding a solution to some challenge at work can be fun. And my personal view is that even – or especially – for a business blog you need to find ways to make it fun.

But it’s not easy. For most people. Otherwise a lot more people who start would surely stick at it.

In business blogging, as in life, success demands focus and perseverance.

Des – I find it interesting that many people are put off by the time ‘investment’ it does take to develop a blog into a valuable communications strategy. It amuses but at the same time frustrates me. Does an email newsletter, a PR campaign, a marketing research project or any other business strategy not take time? Perhaps that’s why we find business blogs wilting on the vine .. the assumption is that it is “easy.”
