Businesses Should Be Alert for Bloggers

Periodically, Laura and I recommend that whether or not you blog, you at the very least pay attention to what is being written about you in the blogosphere. The quicker you know what is being said – by your customers, your competitors, or the general public, the quicker you will be able to respond.
One way to keep an ear out for comments about you is to set up Google Alerts. (www.google.com/alerts will take you to a self-explanatory page). Within a few seconds, you can set up an alert to have links sent to your mailbox. You can have them sent as they happen or aggregated into a daily file (the option I choose). You can also choose whether to monitor blogs, news, and/or videos. (I choose comprehensive which seems to include everything.)
Google alerts are Free – so be creative in their use, and create as many as you like.
The following is a list of alerts to get you started:
- Your name
- Your blog’s name
- Your business name
- Your competitor’s name
- Topics related to your industry
Very quickly you’ll learn which keywords give you the most relevant information about your business, and think of others you want to be alerted about.
In my next post, I will discuss ways to respond to what is (or is not) being said about you.

Check out what others are saying about this post...[...] Businesses Should Be Alert for Bloggers- I receive Google alerts every day, all day long at my job. (How could one find nuggets of power industry journalism otherwise?) I thought this use of Google alerts from Liz Fuller at Business and Blogging was a great idea. Clip it in your “Classics” folder.
