But What About Brett Fav-ruh?

Oh, him, he’s retiring.

In the year where there didn’t seem to be any speculation on whether Brett Favre would retire or not, Brett Favre retired.  Expect no middle ground on the reactions to this news. There will either be fawning over Favre, or hating over fawning over Favre. In my own zen-way, I plan to take the middle ground. He was truly a very entertaining and very skilled quarterback, but his gunslinging ways failed about as often as they worked. And so, it kind of makes sense that this was the year Favre retired. He had a lot of touchdowns this past year, and a good amount of interceptions too. He had a classic Favre underhand pass in the playoffs against the Seahawks. He had a ridiculous, holy crap game winning pass on Monday Night Football against the Broncos, and he had a holy-crap game killing pass against the Giants in the playoffs. Favre’s last season was vintage Favre. The only way it could be more Favre-like is if he waffled a bit more about retiring in the off-season. He still has time to do that though.

  1. It’s funny that you took this approach, becuase as I wrote on my blog, my original reaction was to post something similar. I certianly have my criticisms of Favre as a player and person at times. But in the end, when I remember Favre, I think about the way he played the game. The passion and joy he brought to this game was unmatched, and that is what I will always remember about Brett Favre. Keep up the good work here.

Brett Favre was an entertainer. He was a recognizable face for the NFL. It would have been interesting to see how he would have done with one more season, but he had a nice run last year and if I were in his shoes, I’d like to go out feeling accomplished and still being able to compete. You are right though, I feel waffling is still a viable option here. Green Bay might try to entice him to one more “hail mary” kind of seasons. Either way, thanks Brett for some great memories!
