The “Paris Hilton” McCain ad ran the circuit over the weekend – with most commentators denouncing the ad as “frivolous.”

And that includes Paris’ mother, Kathy Hilton, a McCain contributor herself, who commented on the Huffington Post that:

I’ve been asked again and again for my response to the now infamous McCain celebrity ad. I actually have three responses. It is a complete waste of the money John McCain’s contributors have donated to his campaign. It is a complete waste of the country’s time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs. And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States.

So, was the ad a bad idea? Was it insulting, and if so, to whom?

The fact is, the ad has been played over and over – on the internet and on television shows that would normally never even discuss, let alone air, a McCain ad.

Who would have even noticed an ad attacking Senator Obama’s celebrity if it hadn’t featured current pop culture icons?

Maybe it wasn’t such a terrible idea after all…
