Buying Wine By The Case

The LA Times has a great article on when and why you should consider investing in a case of wine rather than purchasing bottles individually. With summers come parties and informal get togethers. By having a case (or two, depending on your budget and entertaining needs) on hand, you needn’t worry about running dry just as things start to wind up.

Of course, there’s another reason to consider purchasing in advance. When your favorite wine is also loved by local restaurants, it’s not unlikely that by the middle of summer you’re going to be searching for something that simply suffices when the supply runs out. A friend of mine in Dallas does just this – and not only does her well stocked wine racks look impressive, but she takes care to have a bottle handy even when the vineyard starts limiting sales to commercial suppliers only.

It makes a lot of sense, but just as the article mentions, make sure it’s a wine you really love before taking the leap – you don’t want to polish off a couple of bottles in June and still have ten left at the end of August because you realized this wasn’t a flavor you enjoyed in the first place.
