Roy calls Calvin Johnson, the rookie number 2 pick in the draft, Megatron.

That is the Megatron from the movies.

Calvin has enormous hands and that is why he is called Megatron.

Megatron in the NFL is faring much better than Megatron at the Movies.

Megatron is actually the evil Transformer and his counterpart is Optimus Prime for the good guys. The film is non-stop action, awesome vehicles, and tons of fun. So how is the NFL Megatron doing?

The quality of Johnson’s play, and how it compares to how most rookie receivers perform, stands out. He has averaged 16.4 yards a catch and has two touchdowns.
…”Calvin has really made a surge here in the last few weeks,” Martz said Thursday. “The opener (at Oakland), he was pretty good. He was really better, even, this last week.

“I think his confidence continues to grow with his ability to play in the league. It’s fun to watch him get the ball now and run and make plays. source

So how does Calvin “Megatron” Johnson compare to other great NFL receivers out there when they were rookies?

Some of the NFL’s top receivers were slow starters as rookies. Neither Hines Ward, Derrick Mason, Plaxico Burress nor Steve Smith caught a touchdown pass as a rookie. Muhsin Muhammad and Chad Johnson had one TD catch.

Randy Moss was an exception, with 17 TD catches for Minnesota in 1998. Anquan Boldin set the NFL rookie record with 101 catches for Arizona in 2003. Joey Galloway had 67 catches for Seattle.

Roy Williams is another exception. He caught 54 passes and scored eight TDs in ‘04.

In the Mike Martz offense, Calvin does not even play every down, but he does play in the important 3rd downs. Martz even has an end around play for Calvin that netted an important first down in the Minnesota game.

There were some that predicted Calvin would be an All Pro for 10 straight years and if early results are any indication, then that could well be true.
