Getting Your Own Health Insurance

September 27, 2007 by Miranda Marquit

Not too long ago, I mentioned an interesting idea for health insurance: credits for healthy living. However, that is not a widespread plan. And with healthcare costs rising for most of us,  even if you have a job it is getting expensive. If you are self-employed, the cost of health insurance can seem insurmountable.

I am self-employed, but I have somewhat affordable health insurance. You can go to Web sites like healthinsurance.org (which I used to find mine) and ehealthinsurance.com, as well as other sites, to get quotes and compare plans before you decide to buy. This can be a huge advantage. It may not be really cheap, but my family gets health insurance for about $340 a month.

And, happily, since we get through my self-employed status, our health insurance is tax-deductible.

Ooh Miranda, this is one of my favorite topics (not in a good way). I’m so glad that you posted about it, though, because it is one of the areas where the more you know, the better you are. Insurance companies make a lot of money off of the backs of people who can’t understand what they’re about… If you figure out the system, you can stop the bleeding.
Interestingly, I posted about this on my personal blog recently:

Great post! The insurance is evil post, I mean. The current program is such a pain.
