According to the latest issue of Red Herrring, which features a cover story on the Canadian tech scene, the 10 hottest start-ups are:
- Oz Communications, which makes a variety of software for wireless devices
- NowPublic, the citizen-journalism company that just raised $10.4-million venture capital
- Tantalus Systems, which makes two-way, real-time data networks for electric, gas and water utilities
- Extend Media, which isn’t really a start-given it’s been around for several years
- 6N Silicon, which is developed technology to purify lower-grade silicon to be used in solar systems
- Artificial Mind & Movement, which is Canada’s largest video game developer.
- Epocal, which makes a wireless smart card that works with a PDA to analyze blood; raised $31-million venture capital earlier this year
- Mixpo, which develops software so you insert video, photos and links into a Web site or blog
- General Fusion, which is building a fusion reactor
- Octopz, which provides online collaboration software.

“Artificial Mind & Movement, which is Canada’s largest video game developer.”
Hmm maybe Canada’s largest *independent* video game developer. Pretty sure that there are Canadian development houses with 500+ employees.
EA Vancouver for instance was 819 last I looked and growing fast. Ubisoft Canada was well over 500 and looking to open a film division with a target of 1000 more back in mid February.
Still it’s interesting to see how far AM2 has grown. Thanks for sharing this list.
