Cardinal Health, a company in the health care field that employs more than 47,000 people, announced plans to eliminate 1,300 jobs. Approximately 800 of their workers will be laid off, while the rest of the job cuts will come out of a combination of normal turnover and a hiring freeze.
The jobs being lost will be in the medical and clinical products unit. While the job losses will be felt in multiple areas of the United States, San Diego, California will be the hardest hit. Approximately 15% of the eliminated jobs will be in that Californian city.
The reason Cardinal Health has given for the job cuts is the fact that hospitals aren’t buying as much equipment as they were in past years. These eliminated jobs and other plans to tighten the company’s budget will reportedly result in eventual savings of nearly $150 million per year.
Cardinal Health has an annual operating income of more than $1.3 billion.
